Hyde Park Road Changes Seasons on November 1, Not on Opening Day

By The Agency Santa Fe

Ask when Hyde Park Road switches from fall to winter and most people will name the day the lifts start turning for skiers. This year that is November 26, and the resort lists it as tentative. Most of the change happens earlier. On October 31 and November 1, three separate things on NM 475 shut or reset within about 24 hours of each other. A lodge closes, a campground loop closes and a season pass gets more expensive. By the time anyone clicks into a binding, the road has already been running on its winter rules for nearly four weeks.

From the bottom of the road to the top, the calendar for the rest of 2026 looks like this.

The Dates, Read Up the Mountain

Date Where on the road What changes
Oct 10–11 Ski Santa Fe Last weekend of fall scenic chairlift rides
Oct 11 Ten Thousand Waves Izanami sake class, 2–3 p.m.
Oct 31 Hyde Memorial State Park Lodge closes for the season
Nov 1 Hyde Memorial State Park Main Camping Loop, group shelters and first-come sites close
Nov 1 Ski Santa Fe Season pass prices go up
Nov 8 Ten Thousand Waves Izanami sake class on warm sake
Nov 26 Ski Santa Fe Tentative opening day
Dec 13 Ten Thousand Waves Izanami sake class on nigori sake

Read down the middle column and the road shuts down from the top. The summit goes quiet first, the state park follows three weeks later, and the restaurant lower down keeps a monthly schedule straight through.

The Top of the Road Goes Quiet First

Ski Santa Fe's fall chairlift season started September 12 and ends October 11. The Santa Fe Express Quad runs weekends from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., climbing to 11,250 feet, and an adult round trip costs $25. Rides depend on the weather, so a windy or stormy Saturday can cancel them.

The last weekend has more going on than a plain lift ride. On Saturday, October 10, the base lodge hosts Tails and Ales with Española Humane, a pet adoption event listed from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. JJ & The Hooligans play from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day. Sunday, October 11, brings the final scenic rides of the season along with Big Suitcase. One caution about Tails and Ales: the event page lists October 10, but its description still mentions "Sat & Sun Oct 4-5 from 11-3." Check with the resort before planning a morning around it.

After that Sunday, no lift on the mountain carries the public for 46 days, until the tentative November 26 opening. Fall at the summit ends on a fixed date. The rest of the road takes longer.

Halfway Up, the Park Closes in Stages

Hyde Memorial State Park doesn't close all at once. The state's alert board lists a separate date for each part.

  1. The Hyde Lodge closes October 31 and stays closed through April 30, 2027. The board says the lodge is open from May 1 through October 31 each year.
  2. The Main Camping Loop, all group shelters and all first-come, first-serve sites close November 1, also through April 30, 2027, depending on the weather.
  3. The RV Loop and the yurts remain open, also depending on the weather.
  4. Group Site #1 is already closed until further notice because the bridge into the site washed out. That alert was posted September 30, 2026.

That makes Saturday, October 31, the last day for a group picnic under a shelter or a first-come campsite at Hyde, and October 24–25 the last full weekend for either. The lodge's listed closure also starts that Saturday. The shelters close the next morning.

The park also has other conditions this fall that don't show up in its seasonal closure dates. Vault toilet replacement work is expected from September through November 2026. Porta-potties are on site, and the board warns of construction noise. The Hyde Park Sled Hill has been closed since February 2025 and is still listed as closed. Families who used to sled at Hyde when the first snow fell will need another plan this winter. Water at the Ranger Station is limited and available only when an employee is there, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Hyde Lodge has no WiFi or cell service.

The fire rules haven't changed since spring. Stage II restrictions were posted March 26, 2026, and remain in effect, so a late-October cookout at Hyde has to work around them:

Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, charcoal, coal, or wood stove is prohibited. The use of devices fueled solely by liquid petroleum or LPG fuels that can be turned on and off is allowed.

The same posting allows those stoves only in an area cleared of flammable material within three feet of the device. It also prohibits smoking except inside an enclosed vehicle or building. A camp stove will work. A charcoal grill won't.

The Pass Price Runs on the Same Calendar

The second change on November 1 happens at the top of the road. Ski Santa Fe's season pass table lists the adult Platinum pass at $899 in October and $969 in November. That is a $70 difference for buying a few days later. The resort's homepage confirms that prices go up November 1.

That step happens within this season, and it doesn't conflict with the bigger news about prices. Ski New Mexico reported on September 15 that Ski Santa Fe is freezing prices on season passes, kids' tickets and programs for 2026–27, keeping them at last season's levels. So prices are flat compared with last year, and the November 1 increase still applies. A skier who waits until after Halloween to renew loses the October rate, even though the overall price didn't rise year over year.

Ski New Mexico reported one more change at the resort. A new Adaptive Ski Program building will support adaptive skiing and riding programs starting this season. This winter will also be the first full season for the Millennium Triple Chair, which opened January 16, 2026. It serves intermediate and advanced terrain and ten named runs. The Millennium isn't new this year, but anyone who skied only the early part of last season hasn't ridden it yet.

The Stop Lower Down Keeps Its Own Schedule

Not everything on the road is tied to the ski calendar. Izanami at Ten Thousand Waves holds a monthly sake class that runs straight through the weeks between the last chair ride and opening day:

  • October 11, 2–3 p.m., on how processing and finishing choices shape a sake. It falls on the same Sunday as the last scenic ride.
  • November 8, 2–3 p.m., on warm sake. It's the first Sunday after both Hyde Memorial closures, when the park has already gone to its winter setup.
  • December 13, 2–3 p.m., on nigori sake, about two weeks into the tentative ski season.

Ten Thousand Waves says Izanami was selected for the MICHELIN Guide 2026 New Mexico list. In November, while the lifts are idle and the park is closing down, it's one of the few places on the road with a dated event.

Opening Day Comes Last, and Its Date Is Tentative

Ski Santa Fe lists the 2026–27 season as tentative, running November 26, 2026, to April 4, 2027. The resort's August 25 forecast says above-normal snowfall is favored this winter. The same post warns that seasonal outlooks are uncertain and recommends 15-day forecasts for planning trips. The November 1 dates are set in advance. Opening day depends on snow.

The drive itself should be easier than it was two falls ago. NMDOT finished the $3.5 million rehabilitation of NM 475 in June 2025, after repaving seven miles in both directions, and the road fully reopened. Ski Santa Fe is 16 miles from downtown Santa Fe.

That gives the season three dates to plan around. October 11 is the last chairlift ride. October 31 is the last day for the Hyde Lodge and the main campground, and the last day to get the $899 Platinum price. November 26 is the first ski day, if the snow arrives on time.
